The base game is required before you can purchase anything else. Expansion packs, as the name suggests, are created to expand on the game, but not provide the game itself.
The Sims 2 core game can be bought by itself as a regular game, or as included in one of the following games:
-The Sims 2 Special DVD edition: as stated, this comes with a special DVD
-The Sims 2 Holiday Edition (2005 Edition): Also known as the Christmas Party Pack, this comes with holiday themed items
-The Sims 2 Holiday Edition (2006 Edition): Comes with Happy Holiday Stuff. Overall, it's better than the 2005 edition in that it allows your Sims to throw get-togethers and wear different fashions
-The Sims 2 Deluxe: Comes with the Nightlife expansion
All of the above listed (including the base game BY ITSELF) are not being sold in stores anymore. The one currently in stock is called The Sims 2 Double Deluxe, which comes with the Nightlife expansion and a stuff pack, called Celebration stuff which, as its name suggests, is designed to enhance your game with upscale wedding/birthday/anniversary designs and objects.
I'd personally recommend Double Deluxe, but it's really up to you.

This is partly true. If your friend has it you may be able to borrow the sims 2 game and install it onto your computer. You do not need the disks to play if you have the expansion pack disks. I wouldnt recommend this though because if you for some reason need the disks you wont have them.
I did this with my friend, she just has a couple of expansion packs and borrowed my original game to install first and then just play the game using the expansion pack disk.

You cannot install expansions and/or stuff packs when you have the copy version of The Sims 2,you need the original one.
But you can install the expansion and/or stuff packs if you have the original or copy version of The Sims 2: Double Deluxe. Or you can download Double Deluxe on internet. I tried and it worked.
But I recommend you to go and buy the original game.
To play Sims 2 Nightlife, you first need to buy the core game, Sims 2 and install it on your computer. Then you but Nightlife and install that too. Expansions like Nightlife are extensions of the game that give you move opportunities and possibilities in the game.
Really, personally, I think you should wait. In June (June 2 for America, June 5 for International), Sims 3 comes out. Why buy the old version with the knew one coming out in less than a month???Can I buy a Sims 2 expansion pack without having to buy the original Sims 2 game?
The answer is .... Yes .... You do need the original sims 2 because expansion packs are add ons to games like in Zoo Tycoon. If you bought the expansion without the original then it will say that you need it or it wont be able to run! Go to the store and buy The sims 2 Deluxe , it comes with original and nightlife in one download and also its the same price as the original! So then you won't have to buy original and then nightlife for 40$ !!!!!

NO you cant, when you buy a sims 2 game from a shop they always ask you if you have the origional sims 2 because in order to play on the games like nightlife you need the origional ..
BTW - the sims 2 nightlife is a really good game so get the origional which is only cheap and buy nightlife and have a great play lol
Yes, your friend is right. If you want Nightlife, I suggest buying the Sims 2 Double Deluxe instead. It comes with the base game along with the Nightlife expansion and Celebration Stuff pack for $20. If bought separately, you'll pay $20 for the base game and another $20 for the Nightlife expansion.

You can BUY the expansion if you like, but you will not be able to run it w/o the Original game.
On another note, if the problem is space reasons (you dont have the MB to run both), then Id suggest just getting Sims2 Castaway.
yes you do have to have the sims 2 to play the expansion pack.you should get the sims 2 deluxe or the sims 2 double deluxe.they both have night life in them.the only difference is that double del;uxe has celebration stuff in it to and its a bigger file size so it takes up more ram and stuff.
Yes. I have got all the sims and sims 2 games and I am waiting for the sims 3 to come in! You have to have the Original sims 2, install that then you can buy whatever expansion packs you want and play them all together!!!! ENJOY :)
Yeah every one knows that cuz the original sims 2 is the base game and it has to be installed on ur computer first then u can get what ever expansions and stuff packs u want but if u want night life expansion u could get the sims 2 Double Deluxe it has the sims 2 base game and night life\

Yes it is true. You need the base game however there is a combo game you can buy called sims 2 double deluxe edition. It is fairly cheap. It comes with the base game, nightlife and celebration stuff. I'd recommend going for that.

To make any sims 2 expansion pack to work you need the basic sims 2 to install all of the primary features. And nightlife wouldn't work even if you tried.
